As it turns out, a lot of people are abandoning ski resorts for flat lands covered in snow. All they need to do is pull out their kites and using the wind to get riding. Pretty much any open space with snow will do as long as there aren't power lines or dangerous obstructions in the way. Since cold air is more dense, it provides more power than summer air, so you don't need as much wind to get going.
People are already pushing the boundaries with this, as some more adventurous people use it as a way to travel, and the extreme sports crowd push the limits of what's possible. Some have been able to reach upwards of 63 mph. The record for the longest snowkiting expedition was 1,938.67 miles long by Adrian Hayes, Devon McDiarmid and Derek Crowe.
