Bizarrely Low Temperatures Transformed Niagara Falls Into A Frozen Wonderland
This year's winter temperatures have certainly been felt all over North America, with extreme lows and severe weather conditions experienced by millions. If the relentless cold and snow are getting you down (and we know they can), there are still some magical moments that only winter can bring. For instance, only winter weather would cause Niagara Falls to freeze over this past weekend, creating an unearthly landscape of ice.
The falling water collected and froze under the falls, creating these huge ice formations.
Really huge ice formations.
Much of the ice on the rocks and structures surrounding the falls comes from the mist that sprays up and freezes almost immediately.
The mist coming off the falls is thick any time of year. However, in the winter, you can see the buildup as it freezes. Check out the binoculars!
The whole area becomes a magical, but treacherous, winter landscape.
The entire area looks like Narnia.
Rainbows aren't uncommon at the falls, especially with all the water vapor in the air. Yet there's something even more magical about a rainbow over all that ice.

With all that ice, you can almost imagine what it must have looked like thousands of years ago, covered in glaciers. If you're not willing to brave the cold, you can enjoy it vicariously while you sip some hot cocoa. Wherever you are this winter, be sure to layer up and stay warm!
