Briksdalsbreen – an Endangered Ice Wonder in Norway
A so called arm of the famous Jostedalsbreen glacier – the largest one in Europe – Briksdalsbreen is one of the most accessible and stunning parts of this ice wonder. The arm’s size varies throughout decades – its gradual growth and decline were observed in the 20th century. In the 90’s, when glaciers were declining in Europe, this one actually grew noticeably.
Since year 2000 it has been receding again. Today it is in danger of breaking from Jostedalsbreen glacier. Because of this, walking on Briksdalsbreen is forbidden right now, to avoid the menacing separation. Hopefully it will start growing again soon, otherwise its extinction might be inevitable.
Why to go there?: One of the most popular sites to view the glacier in Norway. Due to its recession, it might be a good idea to visit Briksdalsbreen until it is too late.
When to go there?: Anytime – the site and the surroundings are breathtaking all year round.
How to get there?: The site can be reached by car using the Road 724. There is a free parking lot for the visitors. From here it is a 45 minutes hike to Briksdalsbreen or you can hire a horse drawn carriage, which takes visitors half of the way.
